We love British food!

Parents at a school in Camden are complaining about a decision the school has made to change the meat used in school dinners to halal meat. 71% of the school's pupils are Muslim. The two key points of contention seem to be: that the method of slaughter used for halal meat is considered 'cruel' by comparison to stunning, and second, that halal meat is not the British way, and so the Muslim kids have just got to deal with it. Some of the parents don't want their children to be 'forced' to eat halal meat, cos that ain't Bri'ish, innit?

By the way, along with a huge chunk of the British population, I'll be going out this weekend for a curry - one of the great British institutions. An 'Indian' comes from Indian, Bengali and Pakistani establishments and by and large the curries are made with halal meat.

'Indian' seems to be a catch all term used to describe any kind of food from the subcontinent. Check out the back of any 'Indian' restaurant especially somewhere like Brick Lane, and you'll find most of the owners are from Bangladesh.

Assalamualaikum from Canada; I stumbled across your blog while trying to find any places that serve traditional English food, like bangers and mash, roast beef etc, but with halal meat. I'll be visiting in a couple of months, and I'd love to try out all those yummy foods I've read about. Have you heard of any such restaurants?

Thanks, and wassalam...
